I hit my target of a book a week this year, meaning I have 52 books to choose from for this list! So in no particular order…

The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik
I’m not normally a fan of historical war books, but throw in a few dragons and I’m hooked! Naomi Novik’s attention to detail during the battles makes you feel as though you are really there, whether that means bailing water from a sinking ship or diving through a cloud bank on a dragon. Furthermore, the bond between Temeraire and Captain Lawrence is potentially one of the best relationships I’ve ever read.
For bonus material, her short story collection even includes a Jane Austen retelling with Elizabeth Bennett as a fierce dragon Captain!
‘The Hurricane Wars’ by Thea Guanzon
If you haven’t read this book yet, then now is great timing as the second instalment of the trilogy just came out in December! Both books are filled with tension, magic, and about a hundred twists and turns. The relationship between Talasyn and Alaric is enemies to lovers at its’ very best and I can’t wait to see how it develops in the final book of the trilogy.

Sunbringer by Hannah Kaner
This book moves a little bit slower than the first book in the trilogy, acting almost as a bridge between the first and third books. Yet this doesn’t make it any less absorbing as we see the characters grow independently of each other and embrace their own individual roles in the world. It lines things up perfectly for the final book, which comes out in March this year.
‘The Quiet at the End of the World’ by Lauren James
I don’t usually read sci-fi, but Lauren James has created a beautifully cosy sci-fi world that, despite it’s lack of humans, revolves closely around human emotions and relationships. Keeping the pace of the plot is plenty of mystery and just a touch of adventure.
